We neglected to properly welcome Elizabeth Qualia when she joined our team in the Fall—but maybe that was because Elizabeth has already been a member of our staff.
In between receiving her BA degree from Hendrix College (which is also where Melissa Prycer went to school!) and heading to Grad School at Texas Tech, Elizabeth worked in Guest Services. It is such a pleasure to welcome her back! Today, Elizabeth serves as our Curatorial Assistant, assisting Evelyn in caring for the collection. She spends a lot of time behind the scenes, whether in the warehouse or behind the barriers. Let’s get to know her better.
What first got you interested in working in museums?
My first introduction to museums came in the form of a summer internship during college. There is just something about museums that feed the nerd in me. I studied history and to me museums are a way to really connect with the past.
How did you first learn about DHV? Why did you want to join our team?
I don’t remember how I first heard about the Village. It’s been a part of my life for so long. I used to work in Guest Services here before I moved away to pursue my M.A. It was my very first paid job in a museum! Now I’m back, but in a much cooler position (I think) because I’m surrounded by the collection everyday, and I get to research it and learn about the items. (And, as you’ll notice in the photo, Elizabeth is one of the only people allowed to touch the items.)
Are there any special projects/programs that you’re especially excited about?
I don’t think there is anything in particular I’m especially excited about. I am really happy to be back at the Village because this time I’m learning about another part of the operations of the museum.
When you’re not working, what are some of your hobbies and interests? Anything else we should know about you?
Outside of history, my hobby is reading. I read. A lot. I mostly read fiction, but occasionally I like to mix things up with a biography, history, memoir etc. Sometimes I’ll dabble in craft projects like crochet, sketching, or other artistic outlets.
